How I Used A Debt Management Plan To Get Out Of Debt

Like a lot of my friends and family, I’ve made more than a few mistakes with my personal finances. Awhile back, I got into debt. A lot of debt. In fact, the amount of money that I owed on my credit cards and other bills was so large that I started having trouble making the minimum payments. Frankly, I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t want to declare bankruptcy. But, the payments were killing me. Around that time, a close friend suggested I ask a debt management company for help. Here’s what happened…

It Lowered My Monthly Bills

I didn’t know what to expect from a debt management program. So, I approached it with my guard up. I called a local firm that helped people get out of debt and explained my situation. They put together a plan that allowed me to make monthly payments that were much lower than the payments I had been struggling with.

Before I called them, I was shelling out several hundreds of dollars just to make the minimum payments on my credit cards. Honestly, it felt like I was drowning. But, this company created a debt management plan that reduced my monthly payments to a fraction of the original amount. And even better, it was a realistic payment schedule. I could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel (if you’ve ever been deeply in debt, I’m sure you can relate).

Much Simpler To Manage

There was another nice surprise. I was sending monthly payments to so many places (my credit cards, department store cards, doctor’s office, etc.), that I kept losing track of everything. The debt management company changed that. Instead of writing 15 checks each month to my creditors, I could just send 1 check to the company. They distributed the individual payments according to the plan. That was part of their service!

Free And Clear

Today, I’m practically debt-free. I still use 1 credit card to buy things throughout the month. But, I pay the balance off whenever the bill comes. Frankly, I just use the card to rack up points and air miles. The important thing is that I’m out of debt. And it’s a fantastic feeling. So, like my friend told me awhile back… if you’re drowning under your monthly payments, look into using a debt management program to give you some breathing room. It worked for me.
